Q:
Apologies for ignorance here.... A student has connected the LED star directly to a USB and plugged into a USB plug. The light works and also worked with two lights connected. Is this safe/ appropriate use? Thanks, Julie
Asked by: Julie
A:

Hi Julie, If the 1W power LED star is being connected to a USB power source you should be using a 10 Ohm power resistor to ensure the LED doesn’t become damaged. Also if you are wanting to connect two of the LED stars in a circuit you may be better using a 12V power supply. Each LED star draws around 310mA and as such some USB plugs may not be able to deliver the amount of current required. Q:
Slightly less tech question - which perspex is it you've used for the lamp?
Asked by: Al
A:

Hi Al, If you are referring to the image on the product page I believe this is frosted white Perspex and frosted red Perspex.

Q:
Does it come in any other colour? I want to make a blue LED lamp to go inside a porcelain dolls head (or perhaps a multi coloured LED), but I want it to be extra bright for effect. Any ideas?
Asked by: Jeff Barber
A:

Hi Jeff, Unfortunately this only comes in the 1 colour, however if you placed a transparent or frosted piece of material such as Perspex in front of the light you can create a diffused light effect that is coloured. Transparent would work better as you wouldn’t lose the brightness of the light but would still get the tint in colour, a blue sheet can be viewed here transparent perspex sheets blue

Q:
Wanting a LED light kit like this with a push button switch instead of the slide, is this something you offer?
Asked by: Bryan
A:

We don’t currently have any light kits that work on a push button switch. However there wouldn’t be an issue with creating a circuit with a push button switch as long as the switch was suitable rated to the voltage and current you were using. You could either use the 1W power LED star and a push switch, here are some examples of how you can use the 1w LED star. how-to-use-1w-star-led

Q:
Hi can you link more than one (say four) LEDs to the same board? Thanks Karl
Asked by: Karl
A:

You can have a maximum of two 1W Warm White Power LED Star connected to the Micro USB Breakout board, however you wouldn't be able to use the switch as it is only rated up to 3A. Alternatively you can connect three up in series if you didn’t use the breakout board, how-to-use-1w-star-led

Q:
Hello, Can I use the Polymer Lithium Ion Battery (3.7V, 1Ah) with this light kit? If so would you have an idea of how long I could run the lamp from it? Would normal aaa or aa batteries work better ? Thank you Patrick
Asked by: Patrick Coupland
A:

You wouldn’t be able to use the Polymer Lithium Ion Battery or AAA/AA Batteries with this kit as you wouldn’t be able to connect them to the Mirco USB Breakout Board. However you can use both of these to power just the 1W LED star on its own, you would roughly get around 3 hours use of the Polymer Lithium battery and possibly slightly longer from 3XAA batteries.
