A: For doing a countdown you would replace the switch with a 555 timer set to output a pulse at 1 second intervals.

A: You can light up the segments individually by applying a voltage across the anode and one of the other pins. To do this in any meaningful way however you will need a microprocessor or a circuit like the one in our kit.

A: Hi Fred, These could be used as the display for a digital clock, you would need a microcontroller and a clock program to turn the right segments on and keep the time.

A: Hi Asrar, The easiest way to connect this to create a counter would be to use a microcontroller. As this way you are able to program the microcontroller to pass a voltage through the required pins to make that number appear. We already have a kit which enables counting up and down and also the ability to load a pre-set value, https://www.kitronik.co.uk/2118-7-segment-led-display-kit.html.
