The Raspberry Pi Foundation:

"The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK-based charity that works to put the power of computing and digital making into the hands of people all over the world." - About Raspberry Pi.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation was initially founded in 2009 in response to a decline in interest in computer science in schools. The charity aimed to promote the teaching of computer science in schools and developing countries. A low cost, feature-rich, single-board computer was seen as being the perfect platform to facilitate this.

The first Raspberry Pi computer was launched in early 2012, and in less than 10 years has gone through several versions and sold circa 40 million units worldwide. Despite long ago exceeding its initial scope, the Raspberry Pi Foundation continues to innovate, improve the technology, and to engage with millions of people around the globe.

The low-cost hardware, free operating system, connectivity, and wealth of educational material available make the Pi the perfect solution for the purpose it was initially designed for. The appeal and capabilities of the Pi is such that its reach extends far past education. You can find it on Makers benches, computer desktops, and professional installations all over the world. The continued development and innovation ensure that it will continue to go from strength to strength going forward.
