This PICAXE-18M2 USB Starter Pack is ideal for getting familiar with PICAXE chips and the endless possibilities of applications associated with PICAXE.

PICAXE is an easy to use, cost effective, customisable, expandable solution for all of your programming needs. Customise your code for a number of uses based on the specifications of the chip.

The software features both simple flowchart and full programming capabilites in the BASIC programming language.

To get started with the PICAXE® system, a starter pack is recommended. You can click here to view our PICAXE webpage and download the PICAXE software from the links provided.

The Proto Board supplied in this pack is a small assembly board that allows rapid prototyping of PICAXE-18 circuits. The board provides the basic circuit and download connector, with a small prototyping area to allow connections of input and output circuits. Examples include connecting LEDs, buzzers and sensors.

The project board supplied in this kit is the PICAXE-18 standard interface board which is a pre-assembled board fitted with a Darlington driver chip so that output devices such as motors and buzzers can be connected directly to the board.

The board supports 5 inputs and 8 outputs.

Features:

  • Easy to use chip.
  • Cost effective when compared to other programmable chips.
  • Easy to understand flowchart programming.
  • Easily expandable, modular design.
  • Programming language used for the chip is easy to customise/tweak.

PICAXE-18M2 chip:

  • IC size: 18 pins.
  • Memory (lines): 2048.
  • Parallel tasks: 8.
  • Supported input/output pins: 13.

Question:

Hi just wondering does the software on the 18M2 boards work with the PICaxe 20 project board or do we need software for the picaxe 20 software

The software is on the chip so the 18M2 chip has some boot loader software in it. You may need to update your flowchart software to use the M2 chips if you can?t find the 18M2 in the list of PIC chips. Once this is done, as long as you select the 18M2 chip then you can use it with any board that has the right connections. The question of whether the 18M2 chip works with the PICAXE 20 project board is more a mechanical / hardware issue rather than a software issue. The PICAXE 20 project board is designed to take a 20 pin IC and the 18M2 is an 18 pin IC so the holder will have 2 more pins than you need. It would be possible to put the 18 pin IC in to the 20 pin holder, but don?t do this as the power connections on the two chips are in different places and you are likely to damage the 18M2. I?m not sure why you would want to use an 18M2 in a 20 pin board when the 20M2 chips are the same price as the 18M2 chips.
