Version 3 is the newest version of our best selling Mono Amplifier Kit that can be used with any personal stereo equipment, including MP3 players, making it an ideal kit choice for an amplifier case design project.

It uses an NCP2890 audio amplifier IC which is pre-mounted on the undeside of the board and can output 1.0W of power. The NCP2890 is an audio power amplifier designed for portable communication device applications such as mobile phone applications and PDAs. The IC also features an onboard Pop and Click at startup and closedown Noise Protection Circuit.

The kit is supplied with a pre-built jack cable, an 8ohm 66mm speaker, and a AA battery pack and can run off any voltage from 2.5 to 4.5 Volts (Absolute Maximum 5V). For a full list of parts, see the Contents section below.

Previous versions of this amp included a PP3 power connection and were designed to operate around 9V, V3.0 has been designed for use with 2 x AA batteries. There are several advantages to using AA batteries over PP3, they include; AA batteries are much cheaper, more readily available and will also last significantly longer than PP3 batteries, anything up to ten times longer.

    A: Hi Larry, We have just tested this with the micro:bit connected to our new ZIP Halo board and connect the amplifier with clip leads to the ZIP Halo and it works great. We also drove it direct from the micro:bit and that worked to, all we would say is that you couldn’t power the micro:bit from the USB connector. You would also need to power the amp, you could use the same 3V supply for both the micro:bit and the amplifier, connect the 3V supply to the amplifier and then use the following wire to take power from there to the micro:bit, https://www.kitronik.co.uk/4160-jst-jumper-wire-and-socket.html, ensuring it is correctly connected.

    A: Hi Ali, Although the speakers do not have fixing hole we have an example of how to mount the speakers shown in the following document on page 11,https://www.kitronik.co.uk/pdf/2165-v3-mono-amplifier-kit-teaching-notes.pdf. A speaker grill could also be used to cover the front of the speaker and stop this following out of the enclosure if a hole is drilled to fit the speaker through.
