Q:
im making this project at school and its like a portable speaker .so i was wondering if i could put in a rechargable battery pack ? and do you have it on your wedsite?
Asked by: Henri Andre
A:
This kit draws a lot of power and would flatten even a large LiPo battery very quickly so i would not recommend running it from a battery.

Q:
Would the mono amplifying kit work on these speakers.
Asked by: joe
A:
Hi Joe, this is the product page for a high power amplifier. Are you asking if the speakers used in this kit can be used with the normal mono amp? They can but they will not be as loud. The mono amp kit can only output 1x1.6W maximum whereas the high power amp can output 2x15W

Q:
Thank you for the response. I wanted to say that i want to fit the speakers on both sides of a plastic 'cylinder'. What's your opinion on that? Thanks
Asked by: Bilal M
A:
Hi Bilal, That should be fine. You might want to experiment with cylinders of different lengths to see what is best.

Q:
Our previous teacher was not very good at, simply, teaching, and so i am baffled when it comes to understanding what voltages (input an output ones) you would need. I was wondering: - Can we have two different Output leads (Mainly android and I device leads) and does it come with this package. - And are the speakers powerful enough to produce good sound quality in an average sized bedroom. Thanks in Advance ( i might come up with more questions as the time passes so be prepared :P )
Asked by: Bilal M
A:
Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by different output leads? Are you asking if you can attach a 3.5mm jack lead and an iphone connector to the same amplifier? If that is what you are wondering, yes you can. As long as only one of them is in use at any given time. This kit is very loud at full volume and there is no audible distortion or crackling even at full volume. The shape of the enclosure you build has a strong effect on the level of bass.

Q:
Hi, I want to use this kit for my GCSE project but my initial design calls for two speakers per enclosure. So in addition to the two speakers supplied, I want to add two more - I am thinking that two tweeters may be the way to go to get a nice high end sound. Alternatively what do you think about adding sub-woofers to increase the bass? Can you recommend any that would be a good match to the power output of the amp and the supplied speakers; what sort of rating should I look for? Thanks for your help
Asked by: Miles Seabrook
A:
Hi Miles, the high end sounds are really good with the stock speakers so a tweeter might not get you much more performance. The bass is pretty solid too but it depends heavily on the shape and features of the enclosure. It is quite tricky to maximise bass when designing an enclosure, maybe adding a subwoofer would help offset any inefficiencies in the enclosure design? You would want a fairly small subwoofer though as the high power
amp is limited to 15W per channel so any additional speakers would lower the output of the standard speakers. Have you considered the use of a passive radiator? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_radiator_(speaker) It is technically a speaker and used to improve the quality of sound but it wouldn't draw any additional power or require any alterations to the circuit. Might be worth investigating.

Q:
Hi, Is there any way i could wire a 6.35mm jack socket into this kit rather than the standard jack the kit comes with, so it could be used as a guitar amplifier? And secondly, the 6.35mm jack you sell here says 'mono' in the description, would this work given that this kit is a stereo amplifier? Cheers
Asked by: Matt Middleton
A:
Hi Matt, yes that is possible. You would wire the ground connection of the 6.35mm socket to the ground/black pad in the input section of the PCB and then wire the mono output of the 6.35mm socket to both the left and right channel inputs (white and red) on the PCB.

Q:
Would a raspberry pi board fit in this with the associated amp kit?
Asked by: Gary Connoley
A:
Hi Gary, It would physically fit but there's no mounting points for it and no easy access to any of the ports on the pi. The pi requires a 5V power supply. The 12V supply used by the high power amp would fry it.

Q:
I understand that you cannot charge the iPod as well as playing music but do you sell a product that will charge as well as play the music? Or do you know how i could make it work?
Asked by: Charlie Rogers
A:
You would need a different ipod cable, one that includes charge wires. Then you would have to connect the charge wires to an appropriate 5v source and the audio wires to the amp kit PCB. Unfortunately we don't sell the cables you would need to do this at this time.

Q:
how good is the sound quality on the deluxe speakers compared to the standard ones?
Asked by: connor perkins

Q:
will I be able to run these speakers EDGE ED204 with this PCB instead of the given speakers? I will be grateful if you get back to me on this.
Asked by: Mark Beever
A:
I've had a look and the EDGE ED204 speakers are 120W, where this kit only outputs 15W per channel so it is not powerful enough to drive them.

Q:
Will the components and the PCB work with a 150W tweeter speaker?

Q:
Do you know if this iPod version will charge Iphones and Ipods? Also is it possible to run this off both a Jack lead and Ipod lead? Thanks

Q:
If i wanted to run this off a battery pack for maybe 2-3 hours, what kind of batteries would i need and how many? I was thinking along the lines of the larger battery packs.
Asked by: Sam Allum
A:
While you could run this from batteries, it draws about 2A at 12V so if you were using 8 AA batteries (2 x 4AA battery cages for example) It would deplete them in an hour or so. You might be able to squeeze another 30 mins or so out of it by using really high quality batteries but it would be an expensive way to run it!

Q:
If I was going to buy wire to connect the circuit to the speakers as I don't know what it's called
Asked by: Reece Weedall
A:
The speakers are just connected to the circuit with standard wire. Each speaker just has a positive and negative connection. You will need to solder the end that connects to the speaker, the other end goes into a terminal which is tightened with a screwdriver.

Q:
If I bought this circuit and then bought a lead for a lightning ipod lead, would it work? also could you give me a place to get a lead off
Asked by: Reece Weedall
A:
I don't think attaching the new lightning lead will work as it outputs a digital signal rather than an analogue one. I know adapters are available which convert the signal to analogue, I would advise getting one of those.

Q:
Is a weak magnet likely to interfere with the speakers if they're placed around 4cm away from them?
Asked by: -
A:
It would depend on how weak the weak magnet is, I suspect that your magnet isn't going to affect the speaker if its weak and 4cm away. However the speaker may affect whatever your magnet is doing. You won't damage the speaker by having a magnet nearby so I'd give it a go, I think it should be fine.

Q:
can i atach two i pod leads two it and dose the set come with the new or the old ipod connector
Asked by: mark
A:
It is possible to connect two leads, say a normal jack lead and an iPod leaded, however it is important that only one of the leads is connected to a source of music at any one point in time. So yes you could connect two iPod leads a new lead and an old lead. The kit is supplied with the old style lead and we don?t currently have a lead for the newer 5th generation iPods. A single lead with an adaptor may well be the best way to use the kit with different iPods.

Q:
Hi, I'm going to use this kit in my A-Level design project and was wandering if you knew the recommended size/volume for these speakers' enclosure, ported and sealed? Thanks in advanced, Matt C.
Asked by: Matt C
A:
As you are aware there are loads of parameters that will affect how good the sound is. The manufacturer Visaton have a datasheet with loads of information, but don't give a default enclosure volume, or port hole sizes, etc. If I was to make a recommendation I'd only be guessing, it's one of those things where there isn't a right answer, but many combinations of different factors that will work equally as well. I can recommend two options, the low tech option, which would be to take a card box, cut two holes in it and cable tie the speakers in place and then try varying the volume of the box and adding holes, damping material etc. The high tech approach would be to download some shareware speaker design software and get it to analyse different de signs.

Q:
My solar/battery rig will be pretty powerful actually. The panels generate over 750w, and will be powering pumps, lights and several other things. All the items will actually be powered by my 12 volt battery bank. Bearing that in mind, I think your kit might be ideal, particularly the operating voltage range. What do you think? And if it's not, can you supply a kit that would be suitable? I'm currently finishing a completely off-grid eco-house, so everything runs at 12 volt! Cheers, Andy
Asked by: andy
A:
Thanks for the explanation, I'm used to people having a tiny solar cell and connecting it up to electronics and finding that nothing happens. It therefore quite refreshing to find that you know what you're talking about and by the sounds of it the load that the amplifier will be placing on your solar cell / battery will be minimal. We sell the kit with a 12V wall block power supply as that is a good voltage to run off. It wont matter if the battery volta
ge drops a little or is sat at 13.8V, so yes it will work fine. If you don't need the 12V wall block power supply you can buy the kit on its own and then add a jack lead and the two speakers to the order.

Q:
Hi, What is the input voltage tolerance of this kit? I want to run it from my solar/battery setup, and the voltage can vary! Thanks, Andy
Asked by: andy
A:
The TDA7297 which the kit runs off has an operating range of 6V to 18V. The higher the voltage the higher the power you can get out of the amplifier. At 12V on full volume the kit uses 2A so I would suggest that it's not going to be compatible with a solar cell unless you spend a lot of money (over £100) on it.

Hey, I'm going to use this project kit for my GCSE Resistant Materials project and was wondering if you could send me the dimensions for the circuit board completed, I need to include these dimensions in my coursework.
Asked by: Livvy Kelly
A:
The PCB is 77.5 x 59mm in size and the tallest component is the heatsink which is 64mm in height. The speakers have a diameter of 100mm and are 49mm deep with fixing points 116.5mm across.

Q:
can these run of batteries instead of the DC charger ?
Asked by: bob

Technically you could run it off batteries, however the power supply is specified at 2A so if you used 8 AA batteries they would last about an hour on full volume, so it's not something I'd recommend.

Q:
hi do you think i would be able to take a ic unit and remove the speakers and put more powerfull ones onto it and also add 2 extra ones on
Asked by: ashley cohman
A:
The IC used in this kit is a TDA7297 and is capable of driving 15W per channel. The spec sheet for the part details the output power in terms of driving an 8 ohm load. Since it doesn?t state it?s possible to drive a 4 ohm load (two parallel speakers) it?s not going to be possible. With regard to driving a higher load speaker, this will be fine, but you will only ever get 15W out of each of the speakers. Clearly if you go for a 200W speaker it?s not going to work, but if you go a little higher than the 15W it will work fine.

Q:
Can you run this off batterys
Asked by: Mark Simons

You could running it off batteries, however at full volume it takes 2A at 12V, which would mean that you would go through batteries vey fast. For instance 8 AA would last less an hour.

Would it be too cheaky to ask for a sample of this amp kit? Some of my students want to upgrade from the basic one that we provide to them so I would like to try it out first. I am HoD at Akeley Wood School. ps: I already have a power supply.
Asked by: Gerry Cochrane

Unfortunately we are not able to do free samples of this kit. This is due to the cost of the kit and not including a power supply wouldn't make too much difference. You will unfortunately need to buy one if you wish to evaluate this kit.

Q:
I need the switch the DC input and the volume to be off the PCB but still be connected how can i do that its only so i can make a hole for it so it can be used
Asked by: Harvey Coombes
A:
You can connect all the parts that are on the board edge on flying leads, though due to there being 6 connections on the volume control I'd leave this on the board and mount it and the board at that location. You can however quite neatly leave all the items on the board edge and use them as is. Click on the camera icon above to see some examples, the Hardenhuish School example shows this the best.
