High power (15W+15W) stereo amplifier - iPod version

This amplifier kit from Kitronik can output up to 15W per channel into a pair of high quality speakers. The kit is capable of producing a very loud, high quality stereo sound. The kit includes all the parts required (plug power supply, two speakers, PCB etc) to build your own amplifier for use with items such as MP3 players.

The kit is available with either a 3.5mm jack lead or an iPod lead (image shown is for jack lead version). It features a power LED, on / off switch and volume control.

This kit includes:

  • 2 x 20W full range speakers and connecting wire
  • 1 x 12V, 2A wall block PSU
  • 1 x Printed circuit board
  • 1 x TDA7297 audio amplifier IC
  • 1 x Heat sink
  • 1 x M3 nut and bolt
  • 1 x 10Kohm dual potentiometer
  • 2 x 47Kohm resistors
  • 1 x 1Kohm resistor
  • 1 x 1N5400 diode
  • 1 x Blue led
  • 1 x 470uF capacitor, electrolytic
  • 1 x 10uF capacitor, electrolytic
  • 1 x 100nF capacitor, ceramic disc
  • 2 x 220nF capacitor, ceramic disc
  • 1 x Right angle PCB mounting power switch (high current)
  • 3 x Two way terminal blocks
  • 1 x Panel mounting DC power socket
  • 1 x iPod/iPhone lead (*Please note this is not the Lightning connector used on the some Apple devices such as the iPhone 5.  Adapters are available)

PCB dimensions: 77.5mm x 59mm. Four mounting points are available, one in each corner. Full mechanical details.

This kit requires soldering.

High power amplifier teching notes.

Note: The heat sink will become hot when the amplifier is used at a high volume for long periods of time. For the heat sink to work at its best it should be mounted in a well ventilated case.

hi
do you think i would be able to take a ic unit and remove the speakers and put more powerfull ones onto it and also add 2 extra ones on
Response by geoffhampson on
The IC used in this kit is a TDA7297 and is capable of driving 15W per channel. The spec sheet for the part details the output power in terms of driving an 8 ohm load. Since it doesn’t state it’s possible to drive a 4 ohm load (two parallel speakers) it’s not going to be possible. With regard to driving a higher load speaker, this will be fine, but you will only ever get 15W out of each of the speakers. Clearly if you go for a 200W speaker it’s not going to work, but if you go a little higher than the 15W it will work fine.

can these run of batteries instead of the DC charger ?
Response by geoffhampson on
Technically you could run it off batteries, however the power supply is specified at 2A so if you used 8 AA batteries they would last about an hour on full volume, so it’s not something I’d recommend.

How much does the kit on its own weigh, excluding things like casing that I'd have to put on?
Response by geoffhampson on
The two speakers, board & cable are 780g and the PSU is an extra 170g, total weight 950g.

can i atach two i pod leads two it and dose the set come with the new or the old ipod connector
Response by geoffhampson on
It is possible to connect two leads, say a normal jack lead and an iPod leaded, however it is important that only one of the leads is connected to a source of music at any one point in time. So yes you could connect two iPod leads a new lead and an old lead. The kit is supplied with the old style lead and we don’t currently have a lead for the newer 5th generation iPods. A single lead with an adaptor may well be the best way to use the kit with different iPods.

Is it possible to get a lightning adapter for the Ipod/Iphone 5th gen and will it work because it needs to be digital not analouge
Response by AaronSturman on
It is possible to use an adaptor however we do not currently stock them.

If I bought this circuit and then bought a lead for a lightning ipod lead, would it work? also could you give me a place to get a lead off
Response by AaronSturman on
I don't think attaching the new lightning lead will work as it outputs a digital signal rather than an analogue one. I know adapters are available which convert the signal to analogue, I would advise getting one of those.

Do you know if this iPod version will charge Iphones and Ipods? Also is it possible to run this off both a Jack lead and Ipod lead? Thanks
Response by AaronSturman on
This won’t charge an iPhone or iPod, it is however possible to run it off both a jack lead and an ipod lead. Just make sure only one source of music is playing at any given time.

how good is the sound quality on the deluxe speakers compared to the standard ones?
Response by AaronSturman on
Hi, I'm not sure which speakers you are looking to compare. The high power amp comes with full range 20W speakers that give a very good quality of sound and are very loud at full volume.
