The IC used in this kit is a TDA7297 and is capable of driving 15W per channel. The spec sheet for the part details the output power in terms of driving an 8 ohm load. Since it doesn’t state it’s possible to drive a 4 ohm load (two parallel speakers) it’s not going to be possible. With regard to driving a higher load speaker, this will be fine, but you will only ever get 15W out of each of the speakers. Clearly if you go for a 200W speaker it’s not going to work, but if you go a little higher than the 15W it will work fine.

Technically you could run it off batteries, however the power supply is specified at 2A so if you used 8 AA batteries they would last about an hour on full volume, so it’s not something I’d recommend.

How much does the kit on its own weigh, excluding things like casing that I'd have to put on?

It is possible to connect two leads, say a normal jack lead and an iPod leaded, however it is important that only one of the leads is connected to a source of music at any one point in time. So yes you could connect two iPod leads a new lead and an old lead. The kit is supplied with the old style lead and we don’t currently have a lead for the newer 5th generation iPods. A single lead with an adaptor may well be the best way to use the kit with different iPods.

If I bought this circuit and then bought a lead for a lightning ipod lead, would it work? also could you give me a place to get a lead off

I don't think attaching the new lightning lead will work as it outputs a digital signal rather than an analogue one. I know adapters are available which convert the signal to analogue, I would advise getting one of those.

Do you know if this iPod version will charge Iphones and Ipods? Also is it possible to run this off both a Jack lead and Ipod lead? Thanks

This won’t charge an iPhone or iPod, it is however possible to run it off both a jack lead and an ipod lead. Just make sure only one source of music is playing at any given time.

Hi, I'm not sure which speakers you are looking to compare. The high power amp comes with full range 20W speakers that give a very good quality of sound and are very loud at full volume.
