Is it possible to mount the controls off the board? If so what is the best way to do so and would the battery cut off work with a body mount dc socket?

Any of the parts on the board can be mounted off board on flying leads. You just need to make sure that the wires connect the pad on the board to the equivalent leg on the part. On the DC jack as long as all the leads are connected back to the board then it will continue to switch between battery and the power supply.

I have circuit wizard and crocodile technology but they don't include the TDA2822M chip. it would be helpful if you could send me a circuit diagram of the speaker circuit with a chip that can replicate the TDA2822M chip for either circuit wizard or crocodile technology.

Hi Jacob, unfortunately circuit simulators like circuit wizard and crocodile technology are unable to simulate a lot of ICs. Advanced ICs contain a lot of transistors that switch on and off very quickly and most circuit simulators are unable to deal with this.

Hi, I am building an ipod dock for my Design project and i was wondering if this would work. If i buy this product, solder in the 12V transformer (instead of using the DC connector), swap the ipod lead for a lead that charges as well as plays music, and swap the speakers for the '5W 6.5cm full range speakers', would i get a fully functioning stereo amplifier that charges the Ipod/Iphone as well? If this would work. are there any speakers that are the same sort of quality, but are slightly larger (around 10cmx10cm MAX size) and roughly the same price?

You could solder the power wires from the 12V transformer into the PCB where the battery would normally go. The circuit is not designed to charge an ipod though so swapping the cable wouldn't do anything, there would be nowhere to connect the extra power wires to. The 5W speakers are the biggest i would recommend with this kit. The 10cm speakers we sell are 20W speakers and this kit outp uts only 1-1.5W per channel.

Hi Martin, this switch would work http://www.kitronik.co.uk/products/components/switches-and-sensors/standard-slide-switch-single/. Take both your leads and solder both the ground wires into the PCB pad that is labeled Ground. Then solder wires from the Left and Right pads to the two center pins on the switch. One to each pin. Now take the jack lead and solder the two remaining wires (left and right) to the two pins on one side of the switch. (one to each pin.) Take the ipod lead and do the same as the jack lead, but with the pins on the other side of the switch. If by asking about minimum and maximum speaker diameters you are asking what speakers can be used with the kit then: The kit can be used with any 8ohm speaker as long as it is capable of handling 1W peak power. A lower power specification of speaker would be fine provided the volume is turned down. The physical size of the speaker doesn't necessarily translate to more power though can be an indicator. You would be able to use a more powerful speaker with the kit but won't be able to drive it to its full potential. That said don't go buying a 100W speaker and expect it to work as there won't be enough power to drive the coil. Yes the iPod lead will work with the iPhone 3GS.

Yes it is possible to integrate a switch to do that. I would recommend using a slide switch. You would attach the ground lead of both the 3.5mm jack and ipod lead to the common of the switch then one positive lead to each of the remaining terminals. Then connect the other side of the common connection on the switch to the negative terminal on the PCB and both of the other terminals on the switch to the positive terminal on the PCB. Hope this makes sense!

The other thing is i have ordered the apple 30pin to lightening adaptor, will this work (i understand this will not work with charging, but will the sound still come out?) Also, do you know the dimentions of the ipod lead?- thanks By the way, this is for my GSCE project

The circuit comes with a DC connector for the 12V transformer to plug into. It is listed on the product page and you can just about see it on the product image, it's the black cylinder above the switch. As the lightning adaptor is not one of our products and we don't have one here to test with we cannot say for sure, I expect it would work though. The iPod lead is approx. 500mm long and the connector case is a 25mm x 8mm rectangle.

At 5V the amp will use about 150mA so will be OK on the computers USB port. Please note however the lower the operating voltage the quieter the music can be played. At 5V you will get about 0.5W per speaker.

I would like to use this circuit in conjunction with the standard iPhone connector that has 4 wires (Black, Red, White and Green) as the connector is a bit shorter. Is this posible and if so where do the wires go to? Another question I have is, Would it be possible to connect the 4th wire somewhere to allow the iPhone to charge up? (when using the power supply of course)

I don't know what wires connect to which pins on your cable and I know that the iPhone connector keeps changing so I wouldn't want to say what colour wire to connect up. It is possible to charge the iPhone through one of the pins, we have however decided that due to the risk of putting too much voltage on that pin that and damaging the iPhone, that we wouldn't connect it through. If you have a cable with four wires then these may well be 0V, V+ and two audio in channels, however I wouldn't be at all certain that, that is the case. I would GUESS that the black and red wire are 0V and +V respectively and the other two are audio in.

The three connections on the front of the board are all in line so that they can go on a face on an enclosure. That said, it's possible to mount the volume control, power switch, DC jack and LED on flying leads. You might however be best leaving the potentiometer and it?s six connections on the board and put some of the other parts off board. If you do put the potentiometer off board you obviously just need to make sure that the wires connect through to the corresponding pads on the board.

The sound quality isn't bad, however you should be aware that the speakers used in the kit are a fairly basic speaker. It would be comparable to the quality of the sound you would get from playing audio from a laptop, in fact if the laptop sounds tinny then the kit will give better performance. If you are looking for something that has the volume and sound quality of an home hi-fi amplifier with some decent speakers then you want to look at the high power 15W amplifier kit (see related products at the top left of the page).

There will be some heat generated by the IC, however it won't be that much. The IC is likely to be warm / hot to touch depending upon volume but even at full volume doesn't require a heatsink.

Running from a 9V battery at full volume the battery will last about 2 hours. If the volume is lower it will last longer. Some alternatives and the number of hours at full volume are listed below: 3x AA, 2.4 days (max power 0.4W) 3x C cell, 4.8 days (max power 0.4W) 4x AA, 1.2 days (max power 0.75W) 4x C cell, 2.4 days (max power 0.75W) 6x AA, 19 hours (max power 2W) 1x PP3, 2 hours (max power 2W) Please note although some of the options at the top of the list offer longer battery life the maximum power and therefore maximum volume will be lower.

You can connect the higher power speaker in place of the standard speaker. You won't be able to drive the high power speaker to it's full volume, but it will sound far better than the standard speaker supplied with the kit. You don't need to make any changes to the board to use it.

The DC jack socket also contains a switch, such that as the jack is connected the PP3 clip disconnects. This means that it is possible to run off batteries and leave these in place, but as soon as power is connected to the DC jack it runs from the power supply.

Unfortunately the iPod cable only has the 3 wire connections for ground and the two audio channels. As a result it is not possible to charge the device. If the wires were in the cable and the board regulated to 5V then this could be done, but not with this kit.

You can't just connect multiple speakers together without some electronics. The simplest option is to use a good quality speaker that has a wide frequency range. In the related items left side bar you will find a 20W full range speaker, whilst this has more power than you will need it will sound far better than the standard speakers supplied with this kit, but this obviously comes at a cost.

Hello, Im interesting in buying this kit for my GCSE project. Im building a docking system for iPod & other media devices. I have a question that would be really helpful if you can answer. Is there a way you guys have a circuit that would allow me to place a 3.5mm cable as well as a iPod cable. So i can create a iPod dock & also have access to other devices via the 3.5mm cable. They don't need to play simultaneously but just have access to either. If you have any other products that may help my project, that'd be great! :) My teacher recommended you guys so i thought il take a look. How long is the Power DC cable roughly? I need approximately 3 meters. Thankyou :).

You can connect both the iPod and the stereo jack cable to the amplifier board, however you must not connect them both to audio equipment at the same time. The cable on the 12V wall block shown in the related products page is 1.4m in length. It wouldn't be a problem t
o take a 3m length of cable and put a DC jack plug on one end and a jack socket on the other end if you do need a longer cable.

With this kit it is obviously important to mount the speaker in to a case so that as the cone moves in and out the air is forced forwards. If you don't put it in a box then the air just moves around the edge of the speaker and the sound is very poor. In terms of the design of the enclosure you?re not really going to notice much difference between just mounting the speaker against the case and trying to calculate spaces, baffles, damping etc. If you make the case too thin so that the back of the case touches the back of the speaker then there won?t be any air behind the speaker. As long as the case is 50mm deep then it should sound fine, making it larger will only help, but I suspect you would struggle to hear the difference. If you had a set of speakers to cover the frequency range and they were higher powered then the d
esign of the speaker housing would become more important. If you search on speaker design there are loads of websites that go in to all the theory.
