LilyPad: Arduino-programmable E-Textiles. LilyPad is a set of sewable electronic modules–including a small programmable computer called a LilyPad Arduino–that can be stitched together with conductive thread to create interactive garments and accessories. What is ProtoSnap?

The ProtoSnap series is a new way to prototype your project without a breadboard. Everything is wired together on a single board, which makes it easy to explore the possibilities of the components before snapping them apart and building them into your project.

The E-Sewing Kit pairs a LilyPad coin cell breakout board with a switch, a button, and five LEDs. This kit even includes a needle set, conductive thread, a battery and a fabric template so that you can start your project as soon as you open the box.

LilyPad Programmable E-Textiles

As part of Kevin’s E-Textiles workshop at the Teach First Training Day at Highgate School on Tuesday 25th February 2014, Kevin trained three members of staff and one Highgate student in using the ProtoSnap LilyPad Development Board. Whereas the success of an E-Textile circuit made up of Electro-Fashion components depends mostly on sewing technique and the connection between the components, the ProtoSnap LilyPad Development Board focuses on programming.

Consisting of a LilyPad Simple Board, a buzzer, vibration motor, RGB LED, a button, switch, five LEDs, a light sensor, and a temperature sensor, the LilyPad Development Board lets you dive right into wearable electronics. Once you’ve learned how to program the LilyPad Arduino Simple Board, break apart the components and explore the power of the LilyPad platform.

The LilyPad Simple board includes 4 LED boards and a buzzer, offering everything that you need to learn the LilyPad basics. The kit also includes a LilyPad FTDI basic for programming the Simple board, conductive thread and needles, and a Li-Po battery pack to power everything.

Basic Programming Steps

Programming the LilyPad and executing your program takes place in four stages: Write a program > Compile the program > Load the program onto the LilyPad > The program executes on the LilyPad As you’d expect, there are a wide range of tutorials and resources to choose from to guide you through each of these stages.

This is a small board for prototyping through hole components with the LilyPad system. There are an array of pins all shorted together with 10mil traces. This allows for quick and easy prototyping - all you have to do is cut the traces between the holes that you don't want connected!
