Derby Mini Maker Faire 2013 - Preview
Over the past couple of months, the Silk Mill in Derby has undergone some remarkable changes. Derby's Silk Mill is not only the site of the world's first factory, but it is also the keeper of globally significant stories of innovation, creativity and engineering. Aside from the gruelling tasks of redevelopment that have taken place at the Silk Mill recently, such as removing asbestos from the ground floor, sandblasting the walls, and fitting new lighting circuits and flooring (which I imagine to be pretty messy and chaotic), what is deeply encouraging is the fact that the Silk Mill will continue to deliver in terms of championing creativity and all things design and technology related. Take the Mini Maker Faire, for example, which is being held at the Silk Mill this Saturday! As you would have probably guessed, we are extremely excited to have an involvement in the Maker Faire. Let me just run through a few of the things that we have been up to here at Kitronik in the run-up to Saturday and also outline what you should expect to see as you drop by our stall on the day. Since the Elephant and Castle Mini Maker Faire back in July, our Laika platform is no longer drifting cautiously as a 'Kickstarter' product: Laika Explorer has reached its funding goal and is, therefore, set for its momentous launch in only a couple of weeks! Not only will you have the opportunity to get a closer look at the Laika Explorer at the Maker Faire on Saturday, but you will also have the opportunity to see our new Robot Buggy that we have recently designed, which is controlled by the Laika. Our Electro-Fashion range will also be making an appearance at the Derby Maker Faire, including the Electro-Fashion Cat Kit, the Electro-Fashion Magnetic Switch and Magnet, and the Electro-Fashion Light Sensor.

Whether you are a design and technology teacher, a student pondering GCSE projects – electronics or textiles-related – or a hobbyist interested in this field, then we would love to speak to you. From those of you who are new to electronics and seek a challenge – a product providing simplicity for beginners – to those of you who are slightly more advanced and yearn for a sleek way of practicing electronics, then the Laika Explorer has it covered. Or maybe you are more interested in textiles and crafts: Electro-Fashion is for you. We really look forward to seeing you all on Saturday, including our friends over at Nottingham Hackspace. So, what are you waiting for? Be sure to register your attendance at the Derby Mini Maker Faire at the Silk Mill on Saturday 23rd November 2013, which is taking place from 11:00 to 17:00.
